Methods of Carpet Cleaning

Methods of Carpet Cleaning

There are many different methods of carpet cleaning. The big questions are, which carpet cleaning method is most effective? Which is best for your carpet? Which will last the longest? We hope that after reading this article, you will have a better understanding of the different types of carpet cleaning available along with the confidence to choose the carpet cleaning method that will be best for you and your carpets.

Steam Cleaning/Hot Water Extraction

Steam cleaning and hot water extraction are very similar methods of carpet cleaning as the primary strategy is to use hot water to get dirt and grime out of the carpet. Typically less water is used during a steam cleaning than a hot water extraction. Steam carpet cleaning is done by using extremely hot steam to remove particles from the carpet. But for hot water extraction carpet cleaning, hot water is used at a high pressure to agitate carpet fibers and break down dirt. Some sort of cleaning solution is often used during this process to help "wash" the carpet during agitation. After, the carpet is rinsed in an attempt to remove the cleaning solution from the carpet.

There are two big problems with these carpet cleaning methods. First is that when too much water is applied to the carpet, it will take a very long time to dry. So if you have plans to get back on your carpet within a few hours of cleaning, it would be best to choose another method. The second problem is that the warm and moist atmosphere that is created through the use of hot water plus the length of time it will take to dry makes for a perfect bacteria breeding ground. Gross!

Carpet Shampooing

Shampooing carpet is a very traditional way of cleaning the carpet. It is done by using soap to scrub the carpet and release dirt and grime from the surface. The biggest issue with this carpet cleaning method is that in exchange for releasing dirt from the carpet fibers, a soapy residue is left behind. This soapy residue then attracts even more dirt and grime over time. We never ever recommend choosing to clean your carpet by applying soaps, detergents, or shampoos.

Bonnet Cleaning (Chemical Cleaning)

This carpet cleaning method is very popular for cleaning large areas of carpet or areas with high traffic. It is done by applying a chemical substance to the carpet using a large machine to absorb dirt and soil. Though this carpet cleaning method may improve the appearance of the carpet, there are two problems. First, this cleaning method is not deep cleaning. It only cleans the very surface of the carpet, leaving behind lots of dirt and grime down in the carpet fibers. Second, bonnet carpet cleaning leaves behind a chemical residue. Any sort of harsh chemical residue that is left behind could be potentially harmful to people or pets that come in contact with it.
